Medtelligent Incorporated, a leading provider of assisted living software, announced today that its flagship product, Assisted Living Intelligent Solutions (ALIS), has completed the FrameworkHL7™ certification for the FWHL7 interface, after working closely with SoftWriters on the implementation. This new feature enables clients who are serviced by pharmacies using FrameworkLTC® pharmacy management software to receive residents’ medications from the pharmacy within ALIS, removing the need to manually input individual medications by directly importing orders. This is currently a one-way integration and Medtelligent will be working with SoftWriters in 2015 on NCPDP certification as per the ERX mandate from CMS for two-way integration.
“Medtelligent’s ALIS is an ideal match for integration via FrameworkHL7 and to serve as one of the first assisted living software providers to finalize the certification process,” said Heather Martin of SoftWriters. The deployment of robust medication management software solutions like ALIS can make facility managers’ and caregivers’ lives easier, leading to enhanced patient care. The new integration with SoftWriters should continue that trend.”
With the proliferation of electronic medication administration records (eMARs) and the move towards electronic health records in the assisted living industry, pharmacy platforms and integrators increasingly need ways to minimize paperwork and ensure medications and the documentation behind them are as error-free as possible.
According to the June 2013 “Avoidable Costs in U.S. Healthcare” report from the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics:
- Mismanaged polypharmacy, the use of multiple medications by a patient, among older adults resulted in at least $1.3 billion of avoidable healthcare costs in 2012
- The majority of adverse events among older adults involve patients using five or more concurrent medications
- Unexpected adverse events result from mismanaged polypharmacy with no designated healthcare professional keeping track of the patient’s medicines prescribed by different physicians
- Avoidable costs from mismanaged polypharmacy include unnecessary medication costs from overprescription, costs for physician and emergency department visits, costs for hospitalizations due to adverse events, and costs of additional medication needed to treat them
“Billions of dollars and too many lives are lost each year due to preventable medication errors, and Medtelligent has taken steps to reduce both. This certification ensures medications are accurately and easily tracked for residents, minimizing the steps and paperwork required to make medication changes and updates for nurses and administrators.” said Mina Arsala, Director of Sales and Marketing at Medtelligent. “SoftWriters has been a fantastic partner through the integration and certification process, and we look forward to working with them in the second phase of the integration.”
Medtelligent already integrates with Omnicare, another leading pharmacy platform that many senior living pharmacies rely upon, with further integrations planned in the near future. Visit www.medtelligent.com for more information on ALIS.
